Call for papers for Special issue: Plant responses to emerging contaminants
In recent years, environmental and health risks of emerging contaminants have attracted increasing attention worldwide. Numerous emerging contaminants occur in various environments, such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products, endocrine-disrupting compounds, pesticides, fragrances, plasticizers, hormones, flame retardants, nanoparticles, microplastics, perfluoroalkyl compounds, chlorinated paraffins, siloxanes, rare earths and radionuclides. For example, microplastics have been found in both terrestrial and marine ecosystems. After entering the environment, these contaminants potentially threaten the nutrition, growth, and health of plants at various levels. However, there are large knowledge gaps on plant responses to emerging contaminants in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Therefore, more efforts are needed to further understand the impacts of emerging contaminants on plants, particularly at physiochemical and molecular levels.
This special issue will focus on cutting-edge studies on plant responses to various emerging contaminants, particularly new insights in physiological and biochemical mechanisms of plants subjected to emerging contaminants. The studies on the combined effects of emerging contaminants and other contaminants on plants are also welcome. However, manuscripts describing toxicological studies that are not integrated with biochemical analysis and/or actual measurements of plant physiological processes are not suitable.
All contributions should conform to the aims and scope of Plant Physiology and Biochemistry. The themes can include, but are not limited to:
l Plant responses to emerging contaminants at diverse levels of integration (molecular, subcellular, cellular, organ, whole plant, and environmental)
l Plant tolerance to emerging contaminants;
l Combined effects of emerging contaminants and other contaminants on plants;
l Effects of emerging contaminants on plant-microbe interactions.
